Free Guitar Pro Alternative

@gmsra17  - Dec. 9, 2011, 10:09 a.m.

For the past few years, Guitar Pro has really become a popular piece of software. It's a great piece of software with all sorts of features. However, most guitarists only need it to learn their favorite riffs and for practice. Not only that, but Guitar Pro costs $60. So the people who are just interested in viewing tabs have to pay $60 for software that is mostly for composing music.

TuxGuitar came along and is a fine alternative. However, it is limited to just your desktop. In today's "cloud computing" craze, that just isn't enough. People want to be able to do everything on their phones, their tablets, their toasters... So that's why we came up with Canary.fm: a free Guitar Pro alternative that lets you access your tabs from any computer or iDevice.

In Canary, you drag and drop any of your tabs (.gp3-6 or .ptb) into your online library and voila! You can now view your tab anywhere. The iPhone/iPad apps are ready to go but Apple still needs to approve them.

We're still in beta, so all users are limited to just 25 tabs unfortunately. However, this limit may change in the future.

We hope you guys give it a shot at www.canary.fm . Any feedback would be absolutely wonderful! If you have any questions, feel free to ask in this thread.

You can get guitar pro for free thou- ohsnap

I'm personally someone who is not a non-desktop maniac so I wouldn't be able to see how well the program works on something else than my laptop. I'm not playing guitar for now anyways so I'm def not the best beta tester, busy with other things lately. In my case GP has been sufficient pretty much but maybe other members will give it a shot. The idea of permitting guitarists to access their tabs through other utilities than a computer is a good initiative. Good luck with the continuation.

I want to view my GP files on my toaster >:

Glad it caught your interest! Canary works great on computers too actually. Our killer feature isn't our mobile app; there are good ones out there already. It's the integration of all platforms -- desktop, laptop, tablet, phones -- into one simple, slick package.

We're still working on this, but if you're impatient you can duct-tape an iPhone to your toaster ;)

If you're going to pay for program to compose music buy finale.

Guitar pro sucks anyway specially GP6. Just download GP5 or get tuxguitar. GP is just recommended because of how popular it became and the amount of tabs it has.

I'll give it a try and return with delicious feedback.

I know you signed up just to post this, and I know it's technically an advertisement, but thanks for posting it anyway :-) I think it probably needs some work, but there's a definite need for alternatives.

I tried uploading two tabs for songs I wrote, Johnny and Lab. Here's what I found:

  • Triplet feel. The first GP5 I uploaded has an eighth note triplet feel, and that displays correctly on the page, but when I click play, it's played as straight eighths.
  • I can't play the song again. After the song finished once, I hit play again, and nothing happened. I had to reload the page to get it to play again.
  • Repeating a section. It'd be cool if you could highlight a section and repeat that section. If you're practicing something, it sucks to have to take your hands off the instrument every 4 measures to reach for the mouse.
  • Scrolling when changing instruments. When you switch instruments, it should automatically scroll to the current measure. Right now, it scrolls automatically if the song is playing, but only when it reaches the next measure.
  • Keyboard shortcuts. You need keyboard shortcuts. Since you're making a minimal tab player for practice purposes, you don't necessarily need tons of them, but at a minimum you should be able to switch instruments (up/down), measures (right/left), jump to the beginning/end of the song (home/end), play and stop playing (space) using the keyboard.
  • More screen views. A "horizontal screen view" would be nice.
  • Key signatures. Please support key signatures! My first song loaded in C, but it should be in A, and you discarded the accidentals I wrote in. Sometimes that's no big deal, but with other tabs, it could make it pretty hard to read! The second song I uploaded should be in E flat. Seeing a bunch of G sharps and G naturals and no As makes it quite hard to read! They were written correctly in the GP5 I uploaded.
  • Bass clef. Please support bass clef! Here's what the second song looks like on your site. And here's what it looks like in Guitar Pro. The former is unreadable, and the latter is fine. This stuff makes the sheet music incorrect, even if the right pitches are technically represented on the screen.

Anyway, best of luck!

EDIT: Reformatted into a list to make it easier to read, I hope.

This is a really, really good list. Thank you so much for the thought and effort! I've noted down everything in our issue tracker and will get to work on the fixes/improvements.
