Beginner Recommendations

@Sido  - April 6, 2012, 1:19 p.m.

I'm a new guitar player, only been playing for about a month and a half and never had any professional lessons. I was wondering if anyone could recommend me any tabs just to practice that they thought really aided them in improving their technique. If it helps I'm at the level at which I can play Breezy from FFVIII competently (https://gametabs.net/tabs/final-fantasy-viii/breezy-2) and Call of Magic badly (https://gametabs.net/tabs/the-elder-scrolls-iii-morrowind/call-of-magic-main-theme).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To train flexibility of your fingers try this http://www.gametabs.net/super-nintendo/secret-of-evermore/merchant-theme

Let the notes ring out and try different fingerings to get a feeling for what sounds best. Was a nice early workout for me.

Other tabs I enjoyed while being easy (more or less):

http://www.gametabs.net/super-nintendo/final-fantasy-6/kids-run-through-the-city-corner/kabukibear

http://www.gametabs.net/playstation/xenogears/faraway-promise

https://gametabs.net/tabs/donkey-kong/level-1-2

https://gametabs.net/tabs/dragon-age-origins/character-creation

https://gametabs.net/tabs/guild-wars/first-light

https://gametabs.net/tabs/secret-of-mana/spirit-of-the-night-3

https://gametabs.net/tabs/secret-of-mana/rose-and-ghost

And my gau tab, huehue

https://gametabs.net/tabs/final-fantasy-vi/gau

But you should try everything from time to time. The fastest progress is archieved by playing hard stuff that seems impossible at first - but after some playthroughs (radical dreamers took me at least 30 times, probably much more) you get the hang of it and suddenly other (easier) tabs are no problem anymore.

Oh and I almost forgot: Take it slow! It's not productive if you can play something pretty fast but with 90% mistakes like being offbeat, many pauses, snarring etc. Learn a piece slowly and raise the speed constantly. If you struggle somewhere repeat the sections over and over until they are flawless. This will benfit your playing overall.

Just curious do you know any chords? Barre chords? Is there any more info you can give us on where you are skill wise other than those 2 songs?

Also what games or type of music do you like?

Ultimately I think it's best you try to play songs you know and enjoy more than what someone suggests for you to play because you will be more motivated to play it and push past hard parts. Many of archards tabs are simple transcriptions of the main melody with no bass notes or complicated parts. These may be fun in the very beginning but if you want to find something a teeny bit more challenging...

...I recommend these (with what little info you gave me)

https://gametabs.net/tabs/legend-of-zelda-ocarina-of-time/windmill-hut-7

https://gametabs.net/tabs/final-fantasy-vii/cosmo-canyon-2

https://gametabs.net/tabs/final-fantasy-iv/main-theme-176

https://gametabs.net/tabs/castlevania-2/bloody-tears-2

Also I second the kids run through the city corner tab, its really pretty and easy to play.

If you can play breezy competently after a month and a half then you are definitely doing something right.

^ This x20.

Almost every new skill I get way better at, I do it by playing something I'm interested in, but that I have to learn the skill in order to play. I almost never learn a skill by deciding "I need X skill" and just trying to learn that skill. There is a time and place for that, though.

All the songs you recommended are great, I can sort of play them all (not up to speed). I really enjoy playing pretty much anything with a strong melody. Games I have played include a lot of PS1 & 2 rpgs, such as the final fantasy series (all of them) and various other titles. I am pretty much mainly a PC gamer so tabs like the Dragon Age Origins Character Creator are really great recommendations. I know some basic chords but I haven't really focused on them in particular, I can play some basic chord songs (Foo fighters; February stars..) but I haven't really learned any Barre chords. In reference to what Ennea was saying about trying hard things, I am also trying to learn Radical Dreamers (finding it really hard) but what I would love to be able to play is Sight of Spira, someday.

In terms of a specific technique I'm finding hard to deal with is upstrokes in the middle of finger-style pieces. In songs like Reminiscence and Call of Magic (towards the end of the songs).

Some other songs I can play are:

-Reminiscence (issues with upstroke chord thingys)

-Call of magic (same issue)

-A Flower Blooming in the Slums (little bit below tempo)

-Wind Scene (ok)

-Silence before the storm (Really badly, as in barely a song)

-Eternity: Memory of Lightwaves (Chord thingys)

Any other recommendations would be great, thanks for the help so far.
