It's usually listed as "??" but I decided to call it "What??" just for the sake of actually having a word in the title, and because I've seen it listed as "What??" on some sites. You know how video game music naming goes, it's very inexact. Probably because most of the titles are translated from Japanese, so a lot is lost in translation.

I'm nto sure the name of this song and i used to have the 3 disc OST and everything...its making me nuts not knowing the name. I had to save it as What because you can't save a file on a computer with just a ???. I know theres a proper name for this song and i just cant find a correct track listing.

I tabbed this from my piano sheet music where it is simply listed as "??", and on the amazon page for the FFVI OST this track is listed as "????".

The Japanese Title is the kana for "n" followed by ?? The official Squaresoft translation given in the Liner notes for the ost is ??, but What? is a sensible title, and one the community has long adopted.
My view is that the curious title comes from it being a sound, rather then a word. It's difficult for me to explain, but you can probably try this for yourself. It's a bit like "huh"
