war simulator huh?
just get skyrim
@wayfaerer - Dec. 30, 2011, 3:56 p.m.
okay, now i need an opinion.
skyrim? is it worth my money to buy? im big on this style of game, and im a bethesda fan.
the thing is, ive recently takin to getting into FPS games like CoD and killzone (always loved killzone, but i digress), thus i was thinking about getting battlefield 3, fuck MW3, but i really dont know which way to go with this.
sure skyrim is something i damn well know id enjoy, but ive heard its pretty buggy, and ive had enough of over-bugged games; but does it minus from the gameplay?
also, how long is it? im assuming its huge with many hours of gameplay, but is it redundant? repetitive?
sure FPS games are at times, but remember, BF3 isnt a war GAME, its a war SIMULATOR, which is MUCH more intriguing to me.
HELP!!??

You're not a true gamer if you don't have a mountain of unplayed games while simultaneously buying egregious amounts of games you will never play.

i DO have a mountain of unplayed games; and ive beenknown to buy games, play it for a day, then never even look at it again. but i take my gaming seriously and passionately, which is why i like buying games i know i enjoy now; and "egregious" game i buy at this point would be a filler for which to pacify myself until i find something new and anticipated.
at this point, my anticipation for battlefield 3 exceeds that of skyrim, but skyrim is more in my comfort zone of gaming, which is why i cant decide which to have. im thinking skyrim either way; i have FPS games now that can easily tide me over til i get a new one, and at this point, it might just be worth my while to wait for another CoD installment, or even a new battlefield installment. god knows dyce will release a new battlefield: bad company game.
skyrim also seems like the type of game i can always go back to, even after beating, or even playing for 50-60 hours, much like the fallout series, which is a muse in my gaming; i just fucking love the formula of scavving and slaying, clever environment layouts and battle tactics. and knowing bethesda, skyrim will fall under a similar formula, just a little more... archaic, i guess could be the term.
i need to step out of final fantasy. hell, step out of S-E; its pretty bad when a gaming mega-corporation goes so far forward they end up going backwards.
i cant see bethesda making the same mistake, but who knows right?

If you're just going to play single player, do not get battlefield 3. I haven't tried the multiplayer but people say that it's the main attraction.
I could never get into Oblivion, but I just started a file on Skyrim today and actually enjoy it.

I wouldn't say it's "archaic" because the connotation there is that the game is using old design philosophies. Skyrim trims a lot of fat from the older elder scrolls games in the same way oblivion did to morrowind. I would say fallout and the elder scrolls games use different themes but tend to share ideas due to both being western rpgs developed by bethesda.
i need to step out of final fantasy. hell, step out of S-E; its pretty bad when a gaming mega-corporation goes so far forward they end up going backwards.i cant see bethesda making the same mistake, but who knows right?
I think instead of limiting yourself based on companies or franchises just let games stand on their own merits. Not every game every company makes is inherently good or bad. Tomb Raider and Sonic for example have had wildly varied qualities (both shitty games and amazing ones). You have to remember that just because squaresoft developed final fantasy I and final fantasy XIII does not ensure the qualities of the two will be similar. It also doesn't mean the same people are working on the games either. Names are just names.
I think being open minded to different types of games and different franchises is just more...err "fun" I guess. Challenge your perceptions and go outside the box! You might like what you find.
Also if you want to get into western RPGs and have a decent PC I recommend the Witcher.

ive actually meant to check out witcher, but due to my pc being a worthless pile of trash and my netbook having no disc drive and my lacking a peripheral, its out of the question for now haha.
do you know of any other console rpgs developed by western companies worth checking out? except dragon age, i already know of those; adored the first one, but ive yet to play the second save for the demo i had once upon a when. very slick combat, nice upgrade to the first
id also like to get my hands on a decent platformer thats a little more obscure than say uncharted or prince of persia. i played enslaved, and despite poor commercialization and mediocre reviews, it stands as one of my favorite action/adventure games ever, prince of persia being my favorite.
edit: jacob, was your avatar always wearing sunglasses?

Well that's shitty. I've been there my pc has been on it's last legs for a long time now and I just finally got a new pc after nearly like 8 years.

I heard the second dragon age was shit, I haven't played it myself.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1/2
Mass effect 1/2
The Witcher 2 (is on consoles and pc, unlike witcher 1 which was pc exclusive)
Torchlight (more action/rpg kinda diablo ish)
Bastion (again more action/rpg diablo esque)
To be honest the majority of western rpgs that are worth a damn ARE on PC, however many of them are old and could probably run on your pc even.

Enslaved got pretty good reviews iirc?
If you want a good platformer I recommend Super Meat Boy first and foremost. Probably the best platformer to be released in a long time.
Trine 2 is also a good one that just came out and has up to 3 player coop.
others that come to mind:
Splosion man
Psychonauts (not new but many people didn't play it)
some of the newer 2d-ish sonics are pretty decent
henry hatsworth
There's shittons of platformers on handhelds and XBL/PSN if you have access to those. 3d platformers or good 3d platformers tend to be hard to find because nobody wants to play 3d platformers (psychonauts ;-;)
Most indie games are platformers. In fact any time I hear indie game I tend to think "OH GOD NOT ANOTHER PLATFORMER WHYYYY".

Get one along with Skyrim.
Skyrim is probably one of my favorite games now despite it coming out so recently and having a large amount of potentially game-breaking bugs. Some parts of it aren't as great as the past Elder Scrolls games, but overall the game is much more engrossing and engaging (especially over Oblivion). I don't think Bethesda deserves any awards for "studio of the year" or any bullshit like that since they sent out the game without properly testing (like everything else they touch). However, I'd still say that it is my GOTY.
I only really recommend this for PC, as mods will carry it into a whole different experience in the future. Play the game vanilla now, then load it up six months later with 309 mods for a totally fresh play. This is the way it was with Oblivion and Morrowind. Considering there are already hundreds of mods (maybe in the thousands), I expect this to be the case with Skyrim, as well... especially once the official creation kit becomes available.
Also, due to the fact that the game is buggy, the PC version trumps simply because you can use the in-game console to type commands. You'll be able to eliminate stuck items from your inventory, stuck quests in your log, disable clones of characters that you see, etc. In addition, there are some better performance mods that came out recently that increase performance by up to 40% (which is about what I got). If you don't have the best PC, you can still get some good performance.

It surprises me that Bethesda still rolls with the same unsatisfying combat system after all these years. They could take their cue from Condemned, Dark Messiah, or even Demon's Souls. Once they revamp the combat, which is a huge part of the series regardless of all the exploration and quests, an Elder Scrolls game might become my GOTY.
So I'd say get Skyrim if you like the feel of swinging at potato sacks with the depth perception of a rock. That, at least for me, spoils the game.

What potato sacks? The game is so much more fun when you pretend to be a ninja and instant kill everyone whilst sneaking. (I favor the bow, though). Join the wood elve thieves.
But, yeah, I'm with Nate. The game may be entertaining on console (my friend has over 70 hours on it...) but it's a million times more on PC with the mods/console script things.
We're both wood elves and hunters.
