SKYRIM

@OggirtMoonfrad  - June 9, 2011, midnight

Sweet zombie jesus am I excited about this game, anyone else on the brink of exploding in anticipation?

I mean just LOOK AT IT:

Sweet zombie jesus indeed! Thanks for posting the video, man, I probably wouldn't have found out about it otherwise. I wish we didn't have to wait until November though because there really isn't any other good games coming out...

I'm cautiously optimistic about this game. Looks like there's more tactile feedback with combat which was sorely lacking in Oblivion. I'm sure that my playthrough will be the same as with the past few Bethesda games: totally ignore all quests, main or side, just explore and loot dungeons for ~50 hrs of gametime, and never play it again.

Edit:

If you have a 360 or Triple, I'd highly recommend getting Dark Souls in early October. Don't buy into all the hype about its difficulty. Its spiritual predecessor, Demon's Souls, which pretty much exactly plays like this game, was exceptional because of its tight combat mechanics, great level design, and refreshing PvP which shares a lot in common with 2D fighters (mindgames, evolving metagame, etc.).

pros:

Prettier

Better leveling system used (fallout 3/NV)

6 people doing dungeons as opposed to 1 in oblivion

cons:

Underneath the hood nothing has really changed. I'm still given the same essential game I've been playing for the past five years and as fun as it was, I've grown utterly bored with it.

Video gaming is now 90% sensationalist garbage and 10% actuality. I may as well be watching FOX news. Enjoy spending your money gentlemen.

Video games went downhill when youngsters/idiots began to make up the majority of consumers. Demon Soul's felt like a bland action game with dungeon crawl elements tied in. The difficulty was great, but the lack of tactical possibilites made victories less rewarding. Armored Core is by far From Software's better franchise, with the difficulty being matched by depth of gameplay and customization. I'm a huge fan of From Software, so I'll buy Dark Souls anyway.

LOADS of good games are coming out atm, for the first time in a while. HOMMVI, Armored Core 5, Deus Ex 3 (predecessors where great), Dragon Age 3, Diablo III, Dark Souls, 40k Space Marine and Neverwinter are all coming out between now and middle 2012. I am looking forward to Skyrim though, for even if I get bored of it quickly (like Oblivion) the initial experience will probably be good.

Pretty much this. Although I dont understand the 6 people doing dungeons thing. Do you mean they have more level designers or are you saying its multiplayer?

Anywho, Elder scrolls games are just sort of a fact of life for me anymore. They make a new one and I feel obligated to buy it. I loved morrowind and oblivion but I'm just not sure if this new one can really do anything for me other than being pretty.

However I'm more inclined to think that it's not games that are changing, just me. I find myself incredibly bored with most games and I just dont have the same fervor I did when I was younger.

As for the video games now being 90% garbage, it's sort of like the "music now sucks" argument. Whoever posted that comic about "music peaked when I was at my most emotionally vulnerable" had it right. There was garbage games when our favorite games were released and there are good games released now too.

For me, it's just the critically acclaimed games that are popular now (assassins creed, call of duty, halo, etc) just aren't appealing even if maybe they are objectively good games.

I also think the prospect of a 200 hour game is less appealing. I find the short and sweet games hold my attention better without costing a fortune or overstaying their welcome (i.e. portal 1, most original IPs available on PSN/XBLA/steam)

Have you seriously tried PvP in DS? Depth of gameplay is exactly what keeps me coming back to the game- every fight with a player is different and forces me to change tactics and adapt, despite the simple/limited controls.

Admittedly I haven't done any pvp :P. What drew me to the game was the single player elements (along with the cool player hints), so my comments are specifically towards that. I grew bored of the game before it expanded. However, although I can see how pvp would expand the game (using the world against them etc.), the actual game engine makes me lose interest. I was speaking from disappointment mostly, as I would rather play Demon Soul's than those 'critically acclaimed games' karathrow mentioned. Dark Souls will take place in an open world, which is a plus. Hopefully it will include wider combat mechanics also.

I'm not a PC gamer :P (mainly because my pc sucks though XD). I never gave Dragon Age a chance...are they really good games? Actually worth buying? And what the heck is HOMMVI?

I think this gif sums the second one up nicely:

And what the heck is HOMMVI?

Although I've never played it, I believe it is Heroes of Might and Magic VI

Is Dragon Age like Oblivion or is it a God of War type game turned into an RPG?

Dragon age is what happens when a revered RPG maker runs out of ideas and churns out generic crap that plays like a psuedo WoW.

I mean, it's great!

It comes from a unique line of games, namely Baldur's Gate, Icewindale and Neverwinter Nights. The concept is the ultimate roleplaying experience; great character customisation, wealth of items and abilties, tactical challenges, puzzles, dialogue and open ended gameplay (your choices actually matter). Baldur's Gate and Icewindale used sprite graphics, the combat animation being limited to chop, use, yawn, fire and cast. Neverwinter Nights broadened the animation, and Dragon Age (especially 2) made combat more dynamic and fun to watch. In my opinion this was at the expense of roleplaying, but they have'to adapt to changing markets. But Dragon Age still has it's roots on the immersive, open ended gameplay that was Baldur's Gate.
