Calling All Metalheads.

@xSpearPointx  - Feb. 23, 2012, 10:15 a.m.

Hail Friends,

I've recently stumbled onto this band called Powerwolf ,and I'm hoping you guys have more music like this,as I'm trying to bring my Fiance over to the dark side, away from all that...Taylor Swift and whatnot. But she won't listen to all the growly metal like Amon Amarth and such, she really likes being able to hear what they're saying and being able to sing along,so the vocals have to be clear, without getting up there like Dragonforce. We're trying to have a bit more in common, musically.

do you think your girlfriend would go for an instrumental?

It's not bad that Parhelion. Certainly not metal; decent post-rock/minimalist music right there.

"I tend to like the slow-moving, atmospheric kind of metal" - what about the slow-moving, atmospheric none-metal? :)

You bet. I usually find something to like in any style of music, even in places I don't expect.

Extremely valid points Bhael.

I can personally say that some of the bands I listen to address issues, while being a little aggressive with it, that I agree with and help me cope with those issues because they show me that there are others out their passionate about the same things and they're formulating ways to express that in a fashion that manifests urgency. I.E. Destruction of forests or Japanese whaling - Gojira are actually working on an EP to support the Sea Shepherd from whale wars hehe

So I think you're right on with some of your analysis Bhael haha :D

It's tricky arguing for and against our musical opinions, as we risk offending eachother. But I'll continue anyway ;)

You can do that, but it's kind of off-topic in this thread. You could start a "why I look down on metal and people who listen to it" thread, I guess...

There's already 654654321861854798654158676485438743546841321463313246854346854 threads like that on the web...

Really? I thought criticising metal was controversial. If it wasn't I wouldn't do it. I'm way too hip :P.

I understand that you may have met people like that (unable to admit their weaknesses), but it's unreasonable to apply this to metal heads as a whole. I also think it's ridiculous to think a genre of music can cause maladaption - musical taste is a reflection of one's personality/preferences/upbringing, not a cause.

Also, your claim that metal hasn't changed over the decades is completely unfounded - the individualist nature of metal causes it to constantly evolve and change, though the changes might not be perceptible to someone with less knowledge of the historical context. However, you were spot on with one thing - metalheads listen to other genres in a different way, as is only logical. Think about it like this: let's say you go to a nice restaurant and order a steak with a bottle of wine. Would it be reasonable to complain that the steak doesn't taste like chinese food, or that the wine doesn't taste like fanta? Metal heads tend to go back to metal the same way you go back to your favorite foods. It doesn't mean you can't try and love other things, but you'll always have your favorites.

Simply put, you can't look for the things you like in other genres in metal, and vice versa. If you want to hear calm, peaceful music, metal will disappoint you. It's unfair to approach it from this perspective though. You have to try and appreciate the unique qualities, textures, and atmospheres of each genre on an individual basis to fully appreciate them, as I'm sure you already know. Metal requires you to use your imagination, to imagine the epic landscapes and concepts contained within.

I also agree with you that metal can serve as an introduction to intellectual concepts, but that it won't teach you everything there is to know. Nobody expects that. The only way to learn in depth about something is to pursue it in its own right through research and experience.

And no offence taken my friend, but if you really want to make it up to me you could release that Baldurs Gate II - Romance I tab :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Whoooaaaa I never said metal hadn't changed over the years! That would be by far the most stupid thing I've ever said!! It's easily the most progressive genre out of them all lol. I was only talking about the timbre, aka the textures of sound they use :D. And yeah you're right; I don't have the mind set suitable for listening to metal, which is why I can't enjoy it.

Thanks for reminding me about the BGII arrangement. I've been going through another audio setup change recently, so my mind's been occupied. I'll do it soon!

I really enjoyed the none-metal sections of that XD. If I had to choose a metal genre it would be probably be symphonic metal just for the broader range of sounds.

There are no non-metal sections in The Odyssey.

I fear our definitions of metal are very different then :). I understand the presence of distorted guitar isn't a factor in it's determination, indeed, I encourage the genre to drop/limit the instrument; however, things such as drum pattern, vocal style and general atmosphere do imo - and the 'sections' I reffered to lacked the said factors I define metal with.

Well, it was clear from your first post you didn't know what metal was... ;-)
